Dan Steelhammer, ShelterBox – International Disaster Response

  On Tuesday, March 12th 2019, our lunch program speakers will be Dan Steelhammer, regional ambassador for Shelter Box USA, and Club member Shon Keeley from the American Red Cross. They will join us for lunch to discuss international disaster response.

Dan Steelhammer is a native Central Oregonian, a graduate of Crook County High School and the University of Oregon (BS, JD). Dan practiced law in Eugene and then in Bend for 15 years before changing careers to real estate. He has been an active Realtor since 1997, specializing in Commercial Properties throughout the state. Multifamily, industrial, and office sales and leasing are his primary areas of focus. His wife Jill is a recently retired teacher, and they have three children, Henry, Tom and Molly, all in their early 20’s, all products of the Bend La Pine public school system and Oregon higher education programs.

Dan is a member and past President of Mt. Bachelor Rotary, and is on the Board of Directors for Central Electric Cooperative. He enjoys fly fishing, hiking and being outdoors in Central Oregon.

George Lepp – Field Editor, Outdoor Photographer Magazine

  On Tuesday, March 5th 2019, our lunch program speaker will be George Lepp, Field Editor, Outdoor Photographer Magazine.

One of North America’s best-known contemporary outdoor and nature photographers and a leader in the field of digital imaging, George Lepp is the author of many books and hundreds of nationally and internationally published articles about the creative, ethical, and technical aspects of nature photography.

George is field editor of Outdoor Photographer magazine, where his “Tech Tips” column has been read for more than 30 years. His photography is extensively published and exhibited, and represented by Getty Images, Corbis, AgStock, and Photo Researchers. Lepp is one of the first members of Canon USA’s Explorers of Light program, featuring the industry’s most influential photographers. He has presented hundreds of lectures and led workshops all over the world, and often serves as a judge of international photography competitions. A founder and fellow of the North American Nature Photographers Association (NANPA), Lepp has won many awards for his work, including Photo Media’s Photography Person of the Year and the Photographic Society of America’s prestigious Progress Award. First trained in wildlife and wildlands management, Lepp later earned a BA and honorary MSc from Brooks Institute of Photography. Lunch Program: Invention Convention 2019

  On Tuesday, February 19th 2019, our lunch program is our annual Invention Convention.

Every year, Rotary Club of Greater Bend hosts the “Invention Convention” where students from Miller Elementary School are encouraged to think up (and present to the club and their family members) their inventions to “save the world” or just make life a little easier for all of us. It’s absolutely amazing what ideas these young entrepreneurs come up with and this event always leaves us feeling more positive about the future!

Club members help with judging which takes a good half day since virtually every student at the school takes part in this fun event!

Dave Howe, the Battalion Chief Administrator for the Bend Fire Department

  On Tuesday, February 12th 2019, our lunch program speaker will be Dave Howe, the Battalion Chief Administrator for the Bend Fire Department.

Dave will be speaking on the following topics:

  • Reduced response times since the 2014 passage and subsequent renewal of the fire dept. funding levy
  • Replacement of the Tumalo fire station
  • Construction of a brand new station near the base of Pilot Butte that should further reduce response times around the city
  • The incorporation of EMTs to help spread the work load and enable fully-trained paramedics to focus on the most serious cases
  • The creation of an “After the Fire” assistance booklet, full of resources to help fire victims get back on their feet

Lunch Program – Our Club’s Global Grants

  On Tuesday, February 5 2019, our lunch program will focus on our club’s World Community Service efforts. Chairperson Mark Miller of the World Community Service Committee will give an overview and then Steve Rothert, A. J. Garis and Gary Meyers will each present on their global grants. Their inspiring stories include shipping operating machines from Connecticut to Guatemala, hoping the machines will clear customs and get installed before 35 surgeons arrive for a medical mission.

Rebecca Kaufman – Central Oregon Tech Trek Program

  On Tuesday, January 29th, 2019, Rebecca Kaufman will be speaking about Tech Trek Central Oregon: a local, week-long camp at Oregon State University’s new Cascades Campus for girls who are passionate about Science Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM).

48 rising eighth-grade girls from Jefferson, Crook, and Deschutes counties will attend the camp June 24th – 30th. Tech Trek is uniquely designed for girls and offers a first-hand look at how exciting careers in the science, STEM fields can be.

Jon Nelson – Wildlife at the High Desert Museum

On Tuesday, January 22nd 2019, our lunch program speaker will be Jon Nelson, Curator of Wildlife at The High Desert Museum. Jon will be talking about captive wildlife care and training at the museum, and how they use live animals for interpretation and education.

Jon grew up in an Oregon logging family but was born in Kamloops BC in 1979. His dad had moved the family there to find work. Jon came back to Oregon when he was 6 and grew up in the Mt. Hood area. He worked in the lumber industry for 12 years after high school before going back to college to become a biologist. Jon received a degree in Natural Resources with a minor in Fisheries and Wildlife Science from OSU in 2012. He’s been involved at the museum since 2009, but also worked for ODOT and USGS doing wildlife field work with mule deer and raptors.

Christine Frazer – Managing Millenials in the Workplace

Matt Ertle   On Tuesday, January 15th 2019, our lunch speakers will be Christine Frazer, CEO of HR Any Day Consulting and our own Matt Ertle, of Pridestaff. They’ll be presenting on managing multi-generations in the workforce, including the growing percentage of millennials we are fortunate to have in the workforce.   Christine Frazer

Christine Frazer’s career has spanned profit, non-profit, public and private work entities, with the majority of those years spent as a human resources professional in private corrections. Her vast experience in the HR field means, as she puts it, she’s pretty much seen it all. Christine focuses on helping smaller and growing companies set themselves up for success by building a solid HR foundation. She uses her many years of experience and real-life stories to help employers understand the importance of implementing sound processes and becoming compliance focused.
HR Any Day Consulting was the result of realizing her skill was in sharing as much information as possible with anyone who would listen.

Matt Ertle is a local from Bend with an international business background in several critical leadership roles. He opened the PrideStaff Bend office in early 2016 with the goal of creating an experience that businesses and people in Central Oregon trust throughout their careers. Matt feels so thankful to work in the community where he grew up and is now raising his own family. He enjoys all outdoor activities with his wife Ashley, son Levi, and daughter Emme.
