As public information officer for St. Charles Health System, Lisa Goodman focuses on media relations and government affairs. In her role, she has served on the Bend Chamber of Commerce’s Legislative and Advocacy Committees, the City Club of Central Oregon’s Programming Committee and is currently a vice chair of the Bend Economic Development Advisory Board (BEDAB.) She also serves as St. Charles’ representative in the Central Oregon Emergency Information Network (COEIN), a group of 25 local, state and federal agencies that collaborate to provide timely, accurate information in emergencies.

Prior to joining St. Charles in 2010, Lisa was an award-winning health care journalist whose work appeared in newspapers around the west including The Salt Lake Tribune. In her 15 years as a newswoman, Lisa was a Jack R. Howard Science Institute for Journalists Fellow at the California Institute of Technology and a California Endowment for Health Journalism National Fellow at the University of Southern California.

Lisa holds a bachelor’s degree in journalism from the University of Colorado Boulder.

Dr. Michael Johnson has served as the senior data scientist with the Quality Management Team at St. Charles Health since May 2016. Mike advises the senior leadership, conducts data analysis, computer simulations and predictive modeling and supervises a team of eight analysts to help St. Charles undergo aggressive organizational transformation and achieve its vision of creating America’s healthiest community together.

Mike has taught mathematics and statistics courses at Central Oregon Community College and at Oregon State University – Cascades. He launched his own analytical company, Crafted Analytics, in June 2015. Most of his consulting work is in the area of predictive modeling, data analysis, survey administration and assessment, and specializes in applying the results of modeling, simulation and analysis to improve current systems and processes. Clients include institutions of higher education, non-profits and health care-related organizations.

Prior to these recent endeavors, Mike was the Director of Institutional Research at Dickinson College for eight years and departed in June 2015. While performing the duties of the director, Mike also taught courses in statistics at Dickinson and at nearby Harrisburg Community College. Before Dickinson, he spent over 23 years as an Army officer; the last three as chief of the institutional research and analysis branch at the U.S. Military Academy. While on active duty, Mike also taught calculus, probability and statistics and math modeling for seven years at the Academy. He earned a B.S in mathematics from Central Washington University, an M.S. in operations research from the Naval Postgraduate School and a Ph.D. in industrial engineering from the University of Central Florida.

On Tuesday, March 17 2020, our lunch speaker will be George Conway, Director, Deschutes County Health Services. George will be giving a presentation regarding COVID-19, the Coronavirus.

George leads a department of over 300 public health and behavioral health professionals providing a broad range of services to the people of Deschutes County and central Oregon. Prior to this role, he was Senior Medical Officer and Epidemiologist at Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta, GA.

 

Lunch Program: Invention Convention 2020

  On Tuesday, March 10th 2020, our lunch program is our annual Invention Convention.

Every year, Rotary Club of Greater Bend hosts the “Invention Convention” where students from Miller Elementary School are encouraged to think up (and present to the club and their family members) their inventions to “save the world” or just make life a little easier for all of us. It’s absolutely amazing what ideas these young entrepreneurs come up with and this event always leaves us feeling more positive about the future!

Club members help with judging which takes a good half day since virtually every student at the school takes part in this fun event!

Lunch Program: Polio Update – Feb 2020

On Tuesday, March 3 2020, our lunch program will consist of an update on the campaign to eradicate polio, presented by our own Cort Vaughn.

Cort Vaughan is a Polio survivor. Cort joined the Rotary Club of Greater Bend to help eradicate Polio. He founded the Pints for Polio fundraiser in 2012 to raise money for global Polio eradication and to increase local awareness regarding the need to vaccinate all children. Pints for Polio has raised nearly $180,000 for the PolioPlus Fund including matching funds from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

 

Cort is Past District 5110 PolioPlus Chair and the Zone 27 PolioPlus Coordinator covering 14 Districts and nearly 800 Rotary Clubs. Zone 27 includes most of Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, Utah, Nevada, Northern California, and British Columbia.

Cort Vaughan contracted Polio in 1954 during an epidemic that crippled over 35,000 people in the United States, mostly children under the age of 5. Polio paralyzed Cort’s right leg.

Join us in hearing Cort’s inspiring story of growing up with Polio. Cort will also update us on the worldwide effort to eradicate Polio and what it will mean to live in a Polio free world.

Lunch Program: Timm Schimke, Deschutes County Landfill

  On Tuesday, February 18 2020, our speaker will be Timm Schimke, Deschutes County’s Director of Solid Waste.

Knott Landfill – the only landfill in Deschutes County – is estimated to have about ten years of remaining life. The county’s Solid Waste Advisory Committee (SWAC) has been developing a Solid Waste Management Plan, identifying, analyzing and recommending options for managing solid waste after the 135-acre landfill closes.

The identified options span the entire solid waste system, including recycling, composting, collection, transfer and disposal.

Lunch Program: Ron Nelson, Executive Director – Deschutes River Conservancy

  On Tuesday, February 4 2020, our speaker will be Ron Nelson, Executive Director – Deschutes River Conservancy.

Ron Nelson joined the Deschutes River Conservancy in 2019 as Executive Director. Ron was a founding DRC board member, as well as a founding member of the Oregon Water Trust, now The Freshwater Trust. A longtime progressive leader and innovator in the water conservation and irrigation sector, Ron returned to Central Oregon from California where he managed an irrigation district system that included hydroelectric projects, parks, as well as domestic water distribution systems. He also served on the Oregon Water Resources Commission helping guide statewide water policy and management.

Ron brings nearly 40 years of experience in water management, leadership, public relations, development of water law and policy to the DRC, as well as a passion for the outdoors.

The campus creates the intellectual infrastructure to establish Oregon as a center for both research and development, making Oregon a place where companies can start-up, grow, and stay.
