Lunch Program – Bonneville Power Administration

On Tuesday, September 25 2018, representatives from the Bonneville Power Administration will be joining us for a discussion about regional power issues.

Please note: this week, we’ll be at the Riverhouse Convention Center, in the Cascade Rooms E&F.

The Bonneville Power Administration is a nonprofit federal power marketing administration based in the Pacific Northwest. Although BPA is part of the U.S. Department of Energy, it is self-funding and covers its costs by selling its products and services. BPA markets wholesale electrical power from 31 federal hydroelectric projects in the Northwest, one nonfederal nuclear plant and several small nonfederal power plants. The dams are operated by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the Bureau of Reclamation. The nonfederal nuclear plant, Columbia Generating Station, is owned and operated by Energy Northwest, a joint operating agency of the state of Washington. BPA provides about 28 percent of the electric power used in the Northwest and its resources — primarily hydroelectric — make BPA power nearly carbon free.

BPA also operates and maintains about three-fourths of the high-voltage transmission in its service territory. BPA’s territory includes Idaho, Oregon, Washington, western Montana and small parts of eastern Montana, California, Nevada, Utah and Wyoming.

Join us from noon till 1:15 at the Riverhouse Convention Center, 3075 N Hwy 97, Bend, OR 97703, Cascade Rooms E&F.

Bethlehem Inn Tour

On Tuesday, September 18 2018, we will be holding our weekly lunch meeting at the Bethlehem Inn. Gwenn Wysling, Executive Director, will be giving us a tour of the campus. The rebuilding of the Bethlehem Inn was our most recent signature project–the club contributed a total of $75,000..

Please park in the first section of the parking lot at the Bend International School which is located just west of the Inn off Mervin Sampels. It would be helpful if folks could carpool as the parking lot is not that large (approximately 20 spaces). They are currently very challenged with parking, especially since school has started again. Alternatively, park on the shoulder of O.B. Riley Road, just north of the school.

Join us from noon till 1:15 at the Bethlehem Inn, 3705 N. Highway 97, Bend, Oregon 97703. It’s behind Knecht’s.

Lunch with Rotary District Governor Bill Grile

On Tuesday, July 24th 2018, our guest speaker will be District Governor Bill Grile.

Bill began his Rotary journey in 1995 as an obligatory Rotarian when more or less directed to join his local club as an expectation that accompanied new responsibilities as the town’s city manager. “I never wanted to belong to any service club,” he recalls. But it didn’t take long for him to experience the satisfaction and personal rewards realized from fellowshipping with like-minded neighbors and community leaders committed to making a positive difference at home and abroad.

At the 2011 D5110 Conference in Coos Bay, Bill and PDG Bob Kings raised $15,000 for The Rotary Foundation by allowing their heads to be ceremoniously shaved by PRIP Ray Klinginsmith and PDG Jim Lussier.

Bill was raised in the Midwest and graduated with degrees in geography from Carroll University in Waukesha, Wisconsin and Arizona State University in Tempe, Arizona. He and his wife Linda live in Coos Bay where Linda is founder and CEO of South Coast Hospice. They have four adult children and seven grand-children, all living in Oregon. They enjoy time with family, their two Yorkshire Terriers, a cat named Thunder and maintaining six tropical fish aquariums at home.

Bill has served as President of the Coos Bay – North Bend Rotary Club and Springfield Rotary Club. He was an early graduate of the D5110 Leadership Academy, was Sgt. at Arms for the D5110 Conference, chaired the D5110 Rotary Friendship Exchange Committee, has served as Assistant Governor and D5110 Trainer, is a Rotary Leadership Institute Facilitator, and has served on many committees.

Kilong Ung – Journey from the Killing Fields to Building Schools

On Tuesday, July 17th 2018, author/TV personality/community leader Kilong Ung, a Cambodian refugee and survivor of the Khmer Rouge Killing Fields, will speak about his journey from the Khmer Rouge concentration camps to becoming a community leader in Oregon and starting the Golden Leaf Education Foundation.

This is a great meeting to invite a guest–but please RSVP for your guest(s) to Brian Shawver (brian@securityprosbend.com), so that we can arrange for enough meals to be prepared.

Kilong Ung is a survivor of the genocide in Cambodia. He escaped with about half his family when he was a young teenager, and came to the US as a refugee. He went to Reed College, then grad school in mathematics, then worked as a consultant for Arthur Anderson and STEP Technology in Portland, before leaving the tech world to start his own insurance agency in Portland.

He’s been in the documentary film The Bombhunters (director Skye Fitzgerald was named a Filbright Scholar to research and produce that film), TV shows Deadliest Warrior and Deadliest Warrior Aftermath, and the documentary Risking Light.

He published a book about his journey, and started Golden Leaf Education Foundation, which so far has raised money for and completed building 5 schools in Cambodia.
