Our winter wine raffle (where one winner receives an “instant wine cellar” of over 100 bottles of wine!) results in scholarships given to students who otherwise might not be able to attend COCC. In 2013, the club also pledged $25,000 toward the expansion of OSU-Cascades into a 4 year university. In addition, 10 mini-scholarships are awarded to high-achieving high school seniors in a semiannual student recognition program and other youth related activities.
In 1994, the Rotary Club of Greater Bend Foundation (a formal 501c3) was founded. Also known as the Bill Berg Foundation, it was named in honor of the former club member and district 5110 governor. The foundation's purpose has been to primarily fund scholarships for local high school students and other youth related activities. The scholarships have targeted the "average" student population, many of whom have overcome significant personal and family difficulties to finish high school and have the desire and commitment to seek college admission. With funds from the wine raffle, generous member donations and a significant gift from former long-time club secretary Dick Dow, the balance grew to a level to begin awards in 2000. Through continuing club member donations and annual contributions from the club, the corpus of Foundation funds has grown to a balance that enables the scholarships to be primarily funded from annual earnings.
